In the paranoid courts of the Order of the Burning Star, trust is more precious than gold. Those few who earn the dubious honour of becoming a Royal Food Tester are tasked with tasting every meal and every goblet before they reach their master’s lips.
Then comes the waiting.
If the tester collapses in agony, poison has been uncovered, conspirators are dragged before the throne, and heads soon follow. If they survive, they earn the greatest reward their station can offer: one more day to scheme, betray, and survive.
For in the courts of the Burning Star, outliving the poison is often easier than outliving your rivals.
